Assembling a PC in 4+ minutes
BBC News - Technology
A few tips for those in a hurry ...
Now to screw the hard drive caddy into place. I get it in position and, in a miracle of dexterity, screw it in despite the small space, stumpy screws and chunky fingers. Then I realise. It's in back-to-front. There are penalties for parts being in the wrong way or loosely secured.
I'm unscrewing it when, suddenly, there's a commotion. Someone has finished. In a little over four minutes.

and there was me sitting on the floor of my study spending a whole Saturday rebuilding my ancient Win98 PC (now with a 1Ghz Celeron processor, 768Mb RAM and running 98SE ) with Mrs stuck shaking her head in disbelief, "Are you having fun, dear?"ChrisGreaves wrote:a little over four minutes

Well, Ken, it sounds to me as if you are the one that needs a 1GHz overhaul (G&DR)stuck wrote:spending a whole Saturday

Re: Assembling a PC in 4+ minutes
Puts my building skills to shame.
I left home at 9am one saturday & using only 'A' & 'B' country roads (no motorway), drove to a computer store some 50 miles away, negotiating a blizzard on the way. Returned home, had 45 minutes for lunch & built a PC by 4pm.
Now if someone had mentioned that it was a competition, I might have managed it a bit faster.

I'm getting there. That's the 400GB hard drive standing vertically. The tension in the cables prevent it from falling over.wasbit wrote:... built a PC by 4pm.
The feed from the sound card to the stereo amplifier is temporarily held together with spring clips since 2003.
At least I can use my HP27600N and Canon scanner again ...
The STSC APL project is now deemed complete. Actually, that link above led me to a paper by Roger Moore in which I find this memoarble snippet:-
Node numbers had been restricted to two decimal digits by a petty limitation in the billing software. In 1979 this restriction was removed.

That is a common color for SATA cables. Mine are mostly either that shade of red or a very bright blue.ChrisGreaves wrote:...Where can I get candy-red cables?

Also they tend not to be very licorishy(?), more flour and sugar and gum and artificial flavour.

I don't think we have that type of red licorice in The Netherlands, but we do have these:

It wasn't so much the spelling as the use of a variation-on-a-theme-of.stuck wrote:tricky word to spell, try here.
Try, for example, describing the state of Liquoricity.
