IP address of a web site?

Post by ChrisGreaves »

Please and thank you, how do i determine the ip address (the four digit-string think like 198.1.1.64) of a web sites?
I tried the WhoIs service (https://www.whois.com/whois/chrisgreaves.com) which delivers data about one of my web sites, but I don't see the 198. address anywhere in the mass of data).

I am pretty certain that all pages on the internet have an absolute address of four digit-strings separated by the period (.) character. I could be wrong.
Also that an address such as www.chrisgreaves.com is a human-oriented mnemonic for that absolute address, translated through DNS servers.

Thanks in advance
Chris

ping chrisgreaves.com or nslookup chrisgreaves.com
Thank you Hans. Fortunately I already had a command prompt window open ( :flee:  ) so I have been able to add the tracert command to my arsenal.

Chris: I can't believe you've reached your advanced age without knowing what an IP4 address is!

John: de-boggle yourself. I am NOT yet at my advanced age. I am only in my middle-age!(1)

Yes, I knew what an IP address was, the 192-dot-0-dot thingy.
I just didn't know how to get from a menominical form such as www.LandfallGardenHouse.com to the numeric form.
I think of the numeric form as machine language, and the menominical form as assembly language. In those terms I need an assembler, and Hans provided it.

I am, as you now see, middle-aged.

(1) Although some members would say I have not yet advanced beyond "childlike"

Cheers, Chris
