Can WORD Handle a .PNG File
I have Office 2013 Pro. I have a .PNG file that I want to use in Word. Instead of getting an image when I copy and paste the file, I get a bunch of special characters scattered over 134 pages. Apparently Word doesn't handle .PNG file extension. Should I just save the file with a .jpg extension then open it in Word?

Word should be able to handle .png images.
How did you try to insert it?

I tried to copy and paste it and also tried File > Open. I got the same result both times. The file is an image saved using the Firefox (or Windows?) Save Image option.

Try the following:
- Activate the Insert tab of the ribbon.
- In the Illustrations group, click on Pictures.
- Navigate to the folder you want.
- Select the picture.
- Click the Insert button.

Re: Can WORD Handle a .PNG File
Thanks, Hans! That solution worked perfectly.
I'm still curious as to why opening the file with WORD didn't work. I'm pretty sure I've done that before successfully. At any rate it's good to have it resolved.

No, Word cannot open image files. You can insert them into a document.

Re: Can WORD Handle a .PNG File
These also work, and are usually faster:
In Windows File Explorer, go to the folder that contains the picture file. Right-click the file's icon and click Copy, or select the file and press Ctrl+C. Click at the desired place in the Word document; right-click and click Paste, or press Ctrl+V.
OR
Drag the file's icon from File Explorer and drop it in the Word document.

I tried to copy and paste it and still got the strange characters instead of the image.
