0n Windows 7 PowerPoint 2013
I would like to insert a video .avi format.
Step 1
When I click Insert tab, click Video, click Video from My PC...
Navigate to my video
The results
Displays the error
PowerPoint cannot insert a video from the selected file. Verify that the necessary codec for this media format is installed, and then try again.
Step 2
In the powerpoint template, if I click the icon Insert Video
The results the same error displays
The following works
Workaround 1
Insert file from Online Video - eg a youtube video
Workaround 2
1. Click Developer tab
2. Click More Controls
3. The More Controls window displays. Click Windows Media Player
4. Select Media Player object, right mouse click Properties
5. In the property for In URL add path
The results plays the video
Our standard users wont be able to perform Workaround 2
On Windows 10 on PowerPoint 2013
if I insert the same video in the same powerpoint file
If I do the same steps 1 & steps 2 it successfully inserts .avi file and plays
Do you think its codec related?
Can i update the code on the Windows 7 laptop, to easily allow inserting videos.
Initially I thought it was a registry key blocked by group policy by the system administrators.
Does a registry key exist?
Many thanks
TIA

Re: insert .avi - PowerPoint cannot insert a video from the
PowerPoint 2010 and later don't support .avi out of the box. I found a suggestion to install the K-Lite Codec Pack; the Basic version should suffice.
Does that work for you?

Re: insert .avi - PowerPoint cannot insert a video from the
Thanks Hans
I installed the different codec packs and got the same results with a PowerPoint 2013 conversion message ie PowerPoint is converting <video name>
Note this error occurs on WIndows 7 laptops with PowerPoint 2013 . on Windows 10 laptops with PowerPoint 2013 successfully works. Windows 10 works as it supports and handles video capabilities.
The basic codec was fine.
Thank you Hans
