I am convinced that AVAST is slowing my PC when accessing web pages. No pattern to it as far as I can deduce. Google advanced search and Eileen's Lounge come up immediately. Then trying to follow a link (say Hans' "Tiny chameleon the size of an ant") I get just the blue circle rotating for minutes on end. Sometimes I can provoke a page load by clicking on the stop loading icon and then clicking the reload page, but most often it just sits there.
I have tried switching AVAST shields off and it generally makes pages load a lot faster but this is not something I want to run with for a long period.
Is there a recommended alternative to AVAST, please?
Note that, for the near future, (until new PC arrives) I am still on Windows XP.
Thanks

Bitdefender and Kaspersky have a good reputation and still support XP, but how much they impact the system I wouldn't know.
You should really get away from Windows XP as soon as possible!
