Problems after installing Office Professional 2010
Hello,
I have a Samsung netbook with Windows 7 starter edition, 250GB HD and 1MB of RAM.
I purchased it with a trial version of Office Home and Student which has expired.
I am a public sector employee which entitles me to a discount on Microsoft Office Professional 2010 which I have downloaded and installed after unistalling Home and Student 2007 using the Programs and Features in Control Panel.
Now, when I open Excel 2010, if I make a new file and save it, it works fine. But when I try to open an Excel file from Office 2007 or 2003, it will open but if I try to change the file or save it as an Office 2010 file, excel stops working and shuts down.
Windows has no solutions to this problem.
I have checked for updates, but all that windows update offers are updates for the 2007 version of Office.
Can anyone tell me if there is a solution for this?
THanks
Peppurr

Re: Problems after installing Office Professional 2010
I thought the official release of Office 2010 wasn't until sometime in June (of this year, 2010). Perhaps it'd be best to uninstall Office 2010 completely and wait for the official version.
I can't find any mention of your problem, so uninstalling and reinstalling would be the way to go anyway.

Re: Problems after installing Office Professional 2010
Office 2010 has been available since 12th May as a download to business customers, so I think they probably have the official release version. I haven't seen the behavior described, although my use of Excel 2010 has been fairly limited. I wonder if 1 GB of RAM may be a contributing factor.HansV wrote:I thought the official release of Office 2010 wasn't until sometime in June (of this year, 2010)...

Being that they are using Windows 7 STARTER, then who knows what will work!

But would a business customer use Windows 7 Starter edition?Wendell wrote:Office 2010 has been available since 12th May as a download to business customers, so I think they probably have the official release version.

Probably not but I suspect Peppurr101 is able to get Office 2010 via the MS Home User Programme. This is a deal whereby because the company you work for buys truckloads of MS licences, you can get a copy of the software for next to nothing for use at home.HansV wrote:But would a business customer use Windows 7 Starter edition?
I've never taken up the offer of Office 2007 Professional I'm entitled to, mainly because it was only recently I've got a PC cable of running the thing. This thread has prompted me to revisit the MS HUP and now I find that even though my employer is still on Office 2007 I can buy a copy of Office 2010 for the same low, low price.

That is exactly what I did. I expected to get Office Enterprise, and got this instead.
Hans, I did wonder about that too.. but the Excel will save a 'book' successfully if I create it in 2010. If I open anything else with 2010, try to modify it,and then hit 'save' it goes pear shaped.
This is in Windows Starter... in Vista, there is a 'problems and solutions window' in control panel where you can go to look up the error messages that occur when something like this happens. Is there an equivalent in 7? If I could find it, I'd post the info here..
Thank you

In Windows 7, it is called the Action Center. See Windows 7 features - Action Center.

Nothing shows up in the Action Center. I have looked around a bit to see if Microsoft has a forum or troubleshooting help area but no luck.
The problems seem to be with Excel 2010 only. The rest of the Office applications seem to work fine.
I am reluctant to start from scratch with another purchase of Home and Student.. any suggestions would be welcome
(PS- I have tried a reinstall as well from the disc I received... no luck)
Thanks

Re: Problems after installing Office Professional 2010
Since reinstalling didn't help, I think you have two options left:
1) Use a program such as Revo Uninstaller (try the free version first) to uninstall and remove all traces of Office 2010, then reinstall Office 2010.
or (probably better)
2) Reinstall Windows 7 from scratch, then install Office 2010.

Re: Problems after installing Office Professional 2010
Hi Hans,
I will try to reinstall Office. Fortunately I did buy a disc with the download.
Reinstalling Windows 7 might be a bit tricky as this is a netbook and didn't come with a disc. I did do a backup when I first got it using one of the utilities that came with it-and I have a backup partition. Is that sufficient?
Thank you

Did you create a system restore disk? If so, you can use it to restore the netbook to its original state.

Hi Hans,
Yes, I did. But it has the trial version of Office on it which has expired and I uninstalled (or at least I think I did). Will that still work?
Thanks

Re: Problems after installing Office Professional 2010
Most of these "System Restore" disks will only contain the files needed to install Windows to the factory settings.

Where (what location, program, other sources?) are you opening the existing files from exactly?
