Though the puzzle says it's a river, I think that was just a translation issue. It's a pool. (We can assume it is 30ft2.)

Not 30ft2! The edges are 30 ft from the island, so the sides of the pool are more than 2*30 ft long!

Alan, that was my initial thought too.
Since the plank is 29ft that one extra foot can easily be accommodated for in the vault.
