In Word 2016, I'm dragging a HTM report file into my document (a text file works) and I get this:
And the file is not added as I expect (as an embedded file, showing as an icon).
Office installed normally, all seems to work. I Googled but no hits (yet).
and then thisOffice 2016: Can't attach a HTM report

Re: Office 2016: Can't attach a HTM report
This is an old problem, it occurred in earlier versions too.
Microsoft suggests deleting the registry keys HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htm and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.html, then restarting Windows. The keys should be recreated automatically. However, some users report that it helps, others that it doesn't...
Another way of inserting a HTML file is
- On the Insert tab of the ribbon, click Object > Object...
- In the Create New tab, select Package, then click OK.
- In the dialog that appears next, click Browse...
- Locate the HTM file and click Open.
- Click Next.
- Specify a label (caption), then click Finish.

Deleted the HTM and HTML... didn't help. Your package workaround did work OK (thanks!).
I still find it irritating that this happens to me. How is the HTM reg entry in HCR supposed to look like?

I get the same error message that you do, so for what it's worth: both .htm and .html look like this for me:
There are also some subkeys which I don't think are relevant to the problem:

If you get the same error message as I do, our Reg settings could very well be the same. Someone else who does not have this problem who'd like to share their HTM and HTML registry settings?
Hans, question for you: do you have Office 64-bit installed or did you ever do that on your system? Just a thought... I never had this problem but on my new system I accidentally first installed Office 64. Then I uninstalled and installed the 'normal' Office 32bit and now I get this problem. Might not be correlated at all but who knows...

No, I have 64-bit Windows, but never installed 64-bit versions of Office, only the 32-bit version.
Best wishes,
Hans
