Rutabagas/Cabbage Root/Swede/Swedish Turnip/Mangold
The Toronto Star Jan 22nd ran a story on Rutabagas a.k.a. Cabbage Root a.k.a. Swede a.k.a. Swedish Turnip a.k.a. Mangold and fed to pigs in the UK I believe.
Pound for pound it costs the same as potatoes here in Toronto.
The supermarket sells it coated in a layer of industrial-grade wax which I could use for lip balm, the temperature drops again.
I have sliced off the top, sliced it into discs about 1 cm thick, peeled off the skin-and-wax, and stored the discs in water in a tub in the fridge.
Each evening I take out a couple of discs, slice them into 1 cm cubes, and boil them, as I would for spuds.
Tastier than spuds.
The Toronto Star of course has rutabaga recipes that include ingredients I’d never dream of buying.
I tried making French fries, but I was not impressed by my efforts. There again I do not have a serious deep fryer to hand.
Apart from soups, stews and mash, what, if anything, do you do with rutabagas?

I would suspect that they could be fed to cattle, who might well enjoy them.
Compare Dr Samuel Johnson's dictionary definition of Oats:
"a cereal which in England is fed to horses, but in Scotland sustains the population."

It's not a vegetable I eat very often, but when I do, it's usually sliced or cubed, then stir-fried, sometimes with some curry powder.
Best wishes,

Soups, stews and mash basically sums up what you can do with a tuber...besides sticking it up your neighbours car exhaust and watching it explode out the back after several starts only to fly into your other neighbours lounge window smashing it into shards ...assuming you stay in the suburbs and not on a farm...ChrisGreaves wrote:Apart from soups, stews and mash, what, if anything, do you do with rutabagas?
Oh..to get onto point again, here is a list of potential "other" options....though don't get your hopes up too high and it's not like you can stick them into any chocolate cake or doughnut!
BTW: If you have a Pinterest account, the Pineterest link in the article (or if you search Pinterest for Rutabaga Recipes, it will turn up a surprising feast of ideas and options...

Would this also work on FireTrucks from the station to the North of me? It would be a time-critical issue, say, between the hours of 11pm and 6amRudi wrote:...besides sticking it up your neighbours car exhaust and watching it explode out the back after ...

Note how last night was described as "Breezy, Frigid".
In fact, it was so cold last night that midnight was half an hour late in arriving.
Thank heavens for that DVD of The Big Lebowski
