Re: Welcome to the Social Networking forum!
Thank you to the Admins and voters in the poll.
I don't have a question yet because my last query is already in process from the poll thread. BUT, if that turns up anything I am capable of doing, I'll post the results HERE in case anyone else is interested. I'm already pursuing a lead from Stuckling1 in the other thread.

Re: Welcome to the Social Networking forum!
Would Skype fall into this category, too?
Trying to set up in-laws with it, and they're 84 and 82 years old, respectively. It's been... fun.
It will be interesting to see the posts here. Social networking is growing quite rapidly and has become useful for both business purposes as well as a way for families and friends to share photos, etc. Some people are "afraid" of Facebook; not sure why, since you DO have the ability to share only what you really WANT to share. A little prudence or common sense goes a long way there.
Thanks for creating this!

Very often they then swifty change to Firefox or Chrome so they can use a decent ad-blocker !

Re: Welcome to the Social Networking forum!
Thanks Al, I do know of this and I do have it added to my IE8 ('cos it's XP) but I only use IE for the MS Update site so it's a bit redundant.

Me too. The only reason I even found this one is when someone asked me about an IE type ad blocker I went Googling.

Safari also has an extension for AdBlock and automatic updates.

Gee Al, this is the first time I've heard about Adblock and I'm really interested in using it. After following the links I read " Upon installation a welcome page will appear when you open IE."Bigaldoc wrote:Just in case you've not heard of this one. I run Firefox and don't knowingly make use of IE when installing MS updates. Am I missing something?stuck wrote: ... I only use IE for the MS Update site so ...

Re: Welcome to the Social Networking forum!
If you have Automatic Updates turned on, you don't need the browser. Moreover, in Windows 7, Windows Update has become a control panel application, I don't know about Vista.
Best wishes,

No, your selected homepage will stay as is. That's a "first time use" kind of thing. My IE8 remains as it always was.Gloria E wrote:Does that mean that it will take the place of my slected homepage.?

Re: Welcome to the Social Networking forum!
In addition to what Hans said, if you manually run Windows Update in Windows XP, it DOES open IE to retrieve updates. Windows Update (in XP) will NOT run in Firefox.Don Wells wrote:I run Firefox and don't knowingly make use of IE when installing MS updates. Am I missing something?

Re: Welcome to the Social Networking forum!
I installed Simple AdBlock and almost paniced when I couldn't find the icon, but when calm prevailed I discoverd the tinest icon you've ever seen at the very botton right -hand side of IE8. Before I instaled the add-on I encountered many ads on webpages, so far I haven't encountered one. It's like when you have a tooth ache and are on your way to the dentist. Guess what? The tooth stops hurting.Bigaldoc wrote:No, your selected homepage will stay as is. That's a "first time use" kind of thing. Thank you for turning me on to this add-on, I'm sure I'll find it very useful.

The title of this thread is "Welcome to the Social Networking Forum", but it is being used to discuss a wide range of issues.
Can I please suggest that you start separate threads for each of the many issues that are being discussed here, otherwise it will be very difficult for people to follow individual discussions.

Re: Welcome to the Social Networking forum!
Well, I have time this morning since no one showed up for the class I was going to teach about Outlook... apparently too many people stayed home since approximately 8.5 snowflakes were spotted overnight!
Enjoy!
(Seriously, though, I don't FB much because it is a drain on time... I love seeing people's photos and such but don't have time to respond to all their comments or presents.)
