RIP Claude Almer
It is with a heavy heart that we have to inform you that Claude Almer has passed away.
Claude was one of the administrators of Woody's Lounge and later of Eileen's Lounge. He did a tremendous amount of work for both; we will always be grateful to him.
Our thoughts are with his wife and daughters.
See We'll miss Claude Almer

Re: RIP Claude Almer
I met Claude at his home, north of Sydney, in June 2004 and he very hospitably showed me round his environs, including Ku-Ring-Gai National Park (where we encountered an emu, who ignored us entirely!) and the Hawksworth River. He also showed me the entrance to his wine cellar - but no further! Later we met GeoffW in a bar in Sydney.
I hadn't realised that he was ill, and my commiserations go to Mary, his wife, who I met briefly.
A wonderful chap.

Re: RIP Claude Almer
Claude had a stroke in July of 2018. After a long rehabilitation period, he was doing relatively well when he suffered another stroke late in 2019. After that, he didn't really recover. So although his demise is very sad, it's also a relief that he won't have to suffer anymore.
I met him in London in 2012, we had two wonderful evenings.

Sad news, indeed. Claude did so much work for our Lounge, back then and here, to keep it running. Humour and knowledge. Thank you, Claude!

Be fair, we didn't meet only at the bar. There was a zoo involved from memory.John Gray wrote: ↑25 Nov 2020, 17:30I met Claude at his home, north of Sydney, in June 2004 and he very hospitably showed me round his environs, including Ku-Ring-Gai National Park (where we encountered an emu, who ignored us entirely!) and the Hawksworth River. Some years later I met up.with Claude and the Wolfmans in Sydney. There was no zoo that time, and rather much more alcohol.
Claude had a passion for Australia and the Australian bush, far beyond that of many born in Australia. He loved his place with the snakes, lizards and other forms of life whose sole purpose is to kill humans. He was a fire brigade volunteer.
He was a great storyteller who loved a long story with a tagline. A shaggy koala storyteller if you will.
RIP Claude. My sympathies to his family.

RIP Claude
We only crossed paths in the Scuttlebutt briefly a few times, but he seemed a very gentle and friendly guy, advising me not to tap into my neighbours internet / cable TV line, as I remember…
My condolences to the family

Re: RIP Claude Almer
I've just looked back at Claude's posts. It's quite indicative of his character that the last post he made was about the bushfires - and him staying behind to help other people who might need help, while most people had evacuated.
I don't know if the stress of the situation contributed to his illness.
As it happened, that help wasn't required - his area was safe (this time).

I only knew Claude through The Lounge and respected his work and contributions. From postings seen here it is obvious that he led a varied and interesting life. He will be missed by many. My sincerest condolences to his wife and daughters.
