(1) Since it is the siren’s SONGS that tempt, why does Ulysses not just plug his ears like the other crew members?
(2) Since the other crew members ears are plugged, how will they hear Ulysses commands to untie him once they are passed the island?

So, in (1) he was insane (as in "repeating the same action and expecting different results) assuming he obviously KNEW of the perils but chose to torture himself with desire. Since the story appears in somewhat of a religious context, the answer(s) is clearly:
"Because it is written."
This should also cover all further paradoxes, enigmas and outright contradictions that might be encountered.
