Re: For all you digital hoarders
It is so new that the site uses a 4TB drive in the image.
I think we need to get one for each of our machines.

NewEgg.Com has Fantom Drives Gforce3 MegaDisk 8TB USB 3.0 2 x 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive MD3U8000 for $449.00.
Saw this a little while ago. Not worth the extra money at this time IMHO.
Of course, that could change if you really REALLY need the room.

Those prices are high; until the first thousand souls have purchased them...and then they rocked downward.

Re: For all you digital hoarders
I agree the price is high. Based on technology, price will drop with purchases or next advancement.
The price will probably drop by half within 12 months, if no sooner.

Note that the WD My Cloud device has a dual drive bay. The Fantom is also dual drives. So, it is not a single 8TB drive. Also note that with the WD My Cloud devices the default configuration is Raid-1. So you can divide the total capacity in half.

Re: For all you digital hoarders
One would think that the market to typical consumers is rather limited. I think this device would be targeted at commercial users who have very large RAID arrays in order to accommodate their business needs. For example, banks that scan check images must have large RAID arrays because the image data is storage intensive.
Of course, when the price is right I'll probably add on to my corral.

Re: For all you digital hoarders
Serious amateur photographers would be interested and while they are not typical consumers there are an awful lot of them out there. If I had that sort of cash lying around I'd be in the market for a high capacity RAID set up to protect my digital images.BobH wrote:One would think that the market to typical consumers is rather limited...
However, I've already done one blow out purchase on a lens that cost so I can't see my better half sanctioning another big spend any time soon / ever.
