Macrium Reflect Free being retired

Post by stuck »

Today my copy of Macrium Reflect Free told me an update was available. When clicked OK to install the update the splash screen announced that as of January 2024 the free version of Macrium Reflect would be discontinued.

A quick search on this turned up this helpful page on ghacks about this:
https://www.ghacks.net/2022/11/27/backu ... g-retired/

Looks like it's time to investigate the alternatives suggested on that ghacks page.

After receiving that notification back in November, I purchased a license for Macrium Reflect Home 8. I have used the free version for several years and it has served me very well. The license fee is certainly not exorbitant, the software does exactly what it claims, and it is SO simple to use.

Hi Rebel. May I ask what you paid?
And is it a one-time fee, an annual license, or what
Thanks, Chris Acronis? Macrium? or Other?

Hi Chris. I purchased the "Home" version. It was $70 US but was on sale at that time. My total cost was just a touch over $54 CAD. This includes a lifetime license, 12 months of support, and unlimited minor version upgrades. There is a fee for major version upgrades.

Rebel, thanks for this. I can tolerate a price as long as it isn't a black hole that sucks all the energy from my accounts with annual extractions!

@ALL I tried the free version of Macrium yesterday, as soon as I had tried the built-in Factory Reset. (My evaluation test is to create a file or folder and then see if it disappears after a reset or restore)

The backup appeared to run well, but when I came to restore I panicked at something called "Bit-locker.
After which I could not reboot Win11 from the laptop nor from the 64GB memory key created by Macrium.
Great! Just Great!! I've had the laptop six hours and now it is irreparably broken.
And yes I knew to go into what used to be BIOS and change the Boot Sequence menu items.

Went to bed. Woke this morning with a recollection of my essays (Command Prompt) showing a drive X: full of Windows stuff and that magic word "Bit-locker", so I went back, restored via memory key from the USB drive, and tip-toed carefully around the bit locker setting and Voila! it rebooted.

So I have shut my new laptop down so as not to do any more damage (grin!)

Cheers, Chris

Thanks for this too, BitLocker..
Although my data partition and backup drives are *crypted, I have not felt the need to encrypt the boor drive, even though it does have User settings in C:\Users\Chris072\AppData.
My really useful data is always stored in the data partition.
There is no doubt in my mind that anyone could grab a copy of C:\Users\Chris072\AppData an ferret through it finding all sort of useful things, but that was never as valuable to me as was data from my clients.

I find this strange. I am paranoid about software messing up my machine, but not paranoid about malicious humans! And I acknowledge that nowadays malicious humans can arrive via my WiFi connection.

LATER: A quick read of Wikipedia suggests to me that BitLocker doesn't do anything that I get in Truecrypt or Veracrypt in terms of volume encryption. BitLocker ties in with other Microsoft security produces.

Cheers, Chris

Oh Yus!
I am nowhere near as scared of computers today as I am of cathedral cities.
Our nearest cathedral city is 3.5 hours drive from here, so we all feel quite safe.
