Pinning Files To The Taskbar in Windows 11

Post by hlewton »

I have Windows 11 Pro and it is set up to run like the Classic version of Windows 10 including the Windows File Explorer. I have the Office 365 programs pinned to the Taskbar. On my Windows 10 machine if I wanted to pin an Excel file to the Excel Program pinned on my Taskbar all I had to do was drag it until it was hoovering over the Excel icon on the Taskbar and tell it to pin it to Excel. That doesn't seem to be working for me on the Windows 11 machine. How should I pin these files to their respective icons on the taskbar? I guess what I am trying to do is add files to what is called the JumpListItems_Maximum but it will not let me do it. Is there a fix for this in Windows 11?

You cannot do it that way. Instead:
- Open the workbook in Excel.
- Right-click the Excel icon in the taskbar.
- You should see the workbook that you just opened in the popup menu.
- Move the mouse pointer to this workbook.
- You should see a pushpin icon to the right of the filename.
- Click on the pushpin.

Remark: you will only see recently opened files if 'Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists and File Explorer' is ON in Start > Settings > Personalization > Start:

(I have no idea if that works if you use the Windows 10 interface)
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

I have to ask, though I am getting the described method to work, it is not without some funny happenings. I open the Excel file and it opens in a minimized window the way I use Excel. I have to maximize and minimize it a few times before it will show up under the Resents so I can pin it to Excel. Sometimes that doesn't work and then I have to open and close it a few times to get that pin. Is this a known problem with Windows 11? Is there something I need to do to make it work on the first opening of the file?

The taskbar and shell are being worked on in Windows 11. The taskbar was rewritten from the ground up. Now, some missing features are being slowly returned and bugs are being squashed.

So when will that be released? In 2030? Microsoft created a new Settings dialog for Windows 10, released in 2015. Now, 7 years later, we still need Control Panel for a large part of the settings because they either haven't implemented them in the Settings dialog yet, or only in a very limited way.

There have been changes and fixes introduced in a number of insider builds. Since the current insider builds are in the Dev and Beta channels I expect that many of the changes will make an appearance in the next major Windows 11 release later this year.

From what I found on the WEB there is no way of adjusting the list of items in a jump list pinned to Excel without unpinning and re-pinning all of them. Is that true or can I somehow move one file from the bottom of the list to the top without unpinning any of them?
