Mouse Movements and What It Shows In Windows 11

Post by hlewton »

When I am editing an Excel spreadsheet the cursor kind of slides or glides to the next cell when I hit Enter. How can I turn that feature off. I have looked under Mouse Setting under Accessibility and don't see any setting to change that movement.

When I try to maximize or minimize an open window I see all these boxes and have no idea what they are or how to get rid of them. What are they? Can they be disabled so they do not appear? Please see attachment

Thanks

The cursor movement is an Excel option. Go to File | Options | Advanced | Editing Options. Then uncheck "After pressing enter...".

See Disable snap layouts for instructions to disable the snap layout flyout.

About your screenshot: select Start > Settings > System > Multitasking. Click the dropdown arrow v to the right of the Snap Windows slider.
Clear the 'Show snap layouts' check boxes.

I'm sorry to report that unchecking that "After Pressing Enter" did not do the trick. It stopped the cursor from moving to a new cell after pressing the enter key but it did not stop the gliding of the cursor. I remember this happening before and there is a solution but I could not find it again in my searches.

Not sure if it's related to the above problem but I have noticed that some dialog boxes that pop up, especially when copying files to external drives, also kind of swoop across the monitor as they are opening. If that could be corrected, maybe it would also fix the cursor movement in Excel. By the way, this swooping, gliding, or whatever its correct term is, happens in Word too.

Perhaps this:
Click the Start button.
Type regedit and press Enter.
Navigate to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Graphics

In the right-hand pane, create a new DWORD entry, name it DisableAnimations and set its value to 1.
Best wishes,
Hans

Hans, I get to Common but there is no Graphics to make that new DWORD key. Can I also create the Graphics entry and go from there to create the DWORD key? If so, what do I do to make the Graphics entry? There are 6 or 7 choices when I right click and choose New on the Common entry.

When you are in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common, select Edit > New > Key.
Name the new key Graphics.
Then select Edit > New > DWORD (32-bit) Value etc.

Hans

Thank you. That worked and now my cursor is as I am used to.

The modification to the registry above made the mouse movements in Excel and Word work the way I wanted them to work. However, when I am copying files to other drives, the dialog box that pops up asking if I want to Replace or Skip Files still kind of glides to its position instead of just snapping open. Is there a modification I can make to fix that too?

Select Start > Settings > Accessibility > Visual Effects.
Set the 'Animation effects' slider to Off.
Does that do what you want?
