Common Surnames

Post by Graeme »

Whilst waiting for an automated star reduction process to complete on my M51 image I clicked one of those Twitter clickbait things that you know you shouldn't click but you do anyway sometimes. It was "A Selection of Maps We Weren’t Taught in School" and actually quite interesting! Here's the one for Most Common Surnames in Europe:

France is a surprise!

A fine drop of brandy!

Not the first French surname that springs to mind though is it?

Thanks Graeme. Now I have to watch for a chance to spring "the era of polonization" on my friends.
Cheers, Chris

No, it's spelt pollination, and it belongs in one of the springtime threads

I should have liked to have seen results if the UK were divided into England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

And one wonders why Switzerland was not included.

To my surprise, Scotland is also Smith (I'd heard it was MacDonald, but apparently that's only true in the Highlands and Islands.) Wales is Jones and N. Ireland reflects the handing over of land to the Campbells (although other lists give Doherty). If you look at Ireland as the south, then it's Murphy.

I checked the most common surnames in the US. Smith, Johnson, WIlliams, Brown and Jones seem to have led the list for decades with Brown and Jones sometimes swapping positions.
