Update: Firefox 91 released

Post by Argus »

Fx 91 is out.
You can find a copy (for your desktop OS) here.

They are excited as usual; release notes.

So, what's the difference? :hmmn:

Thanks!

In Scots, "what's the difference" would be "whit's the difference", so there!
Best wishes,
Hans

It's Firefox with deep-fried Mars Bars! :laugh:

And a sad bagpipe tune in the background when you get a 404?

I think you're both right; you just have to find the setting for the deep-fried Mars Bar.

The downside of Firefox 91 is that, even with the settings
* browser.proton.enabled
* browser.proton.contextmenus.enabled

set to False, the Bookmark entries have become 'double-spaced' again, and lengthy Bookmark menus have to be scrolled.

Another search exercise to find if a different way round this has been found in v91...

Why can't they leave well alone?

The interesting thing with changes is that everyone can get upset about different ones. :grin:

But in this case I can agree with you, at the same time as I have my own pet peeves, even though I have long given up to keep that kind of control. :grin: I have, of course, plenty of different folders in the Bookmark menu; the main menu, and perhaps a couple of the folders have to be scrolled at rare times.

Speaking of changes, and off topic ones [mea culpa]; the other day Twitter did some UI changes, more space as you mentioned about Fx, but also colour changes ... The standard theme is and has been blue, no surprise there; however, in for example, the list of accounts who follows your account there used to be a blue button if you follow their account, and white button if you didn't. Now, standard theme is still blue, but in the list they turned colours upside down; white if you follow, and black(!) if you don't. The result: some people thought Twitter had suddenly helped them unfollow accounts (that followed them), and started clicking on the white buttons, with the result that they unfollowed ...

I think we have to endure this period of change for the sake of change, it can't last for ever; or we have a new generation that sees it as normal.

As for Fx config tweaks, I have some (other), the trend seems to be that they are removed after some time.

Could be worse, I guess. As the Haggunenon Admiral ship in The Hitchhiker's guide.
"... the interior of the ship was completely black. There were black controls labelled in black, on a black background, with a little light that lit up black ..."

I have some Bluetooth Sony headphones where the buttons to turn on/off and increase/decrease the volume are black on a black surround, and need a strong light on them to make out the slightly-raised symbols.

By the way, the Firefox 91 (90 and 89) double-spaced menu stupidity seems to be fixable by adding into the Firefox profile a bunch of folders and files to change CSS. See Github. I think you also need to change an about:config setting to make it read the userChrome.css file...

If anything, and if possible this late, they should concentrate on what might increase their market share.

Got it working now. My mistake was to edit the default profile location when my actual profile is in a different location (I'd forgotten I'd made that tweak :blush: )

I used the instructions by the user called 'wyxchari' in this thread:
    https://mozilla.crowdicity.com/post/720482
In summary:
1) in about:config set toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets to TRUE
2) in the FF profile create a folder called 'chrome'
3) in that folder create a file called 'userChrome.css'
4) copy and paste the given lines into that file
5) restart FF

If that makes the spacing too tight, increase '0px' to taste.

I don't see any obvious downsides that weren't already in v91, so no negative progress this time.
