Historically, to edit a comment in Word, I would click in the comment and edit (1 step).
Now, I have to click the three horizontal dots on the upper right of the comment, select Edit comment, click in the comment to make my edits, and then click the check mark (4 steps).
Is it possible to revert to the former setting?

Post feedback to Microsoft and hope. Comments has undergone major UI changes and they are not done yet. Feedback may help.

I may be cynical, but I can't imagine that the comments of one of MS's billions of users will have any impact on the product.

One, no. But they have been receiving complaints and they do hear them. Sometimes they make changes in response.
