Pumpkin Seeds

Post by Winston »

It is that time of the year. I head out to the local pumpkin patch and take advantage of the leftover pumpkins that did not get picked to be turned into spooky jack-o-lantern. They sell them around here for a good price after Halloween. I love cooking pumpkins and the seeds. I do not remember where I got the recipe from but it is a favorite of mine.
  • ingredients
    ·2 cups — pumpkin seeds
    ·1 teaspoon — worcestershire sauce
    ·1 1/2 — tablespoons melted butter
·1 teaspoon (or more to taste) — salt
  • Directions
·Preheat oven to 250 Fahrenheit or 120 Celsius.
·Thoroughly rinse seeds and pick out stray bits of pumpkin.
·Pour seeds on a cookie sheet, preferably one with sides.
·Combine Worcestershire sauce and melted butter.
·Pour Worcestershire sauce/butter combination over seeds and stir to distribute evenly.
    ·Evenly sprinkle salt over seeds.
·Bake for two hours, stirring every half hour.
    ·Let cool and enjoy!
    ·Store in airtight container.

Hi Winston.
I remember this. But we didn't have Halloween, just pumpkins on a vine. I would harvest the seeds, rinse as you say, and then just bake.
Sprinkled with salt (this was in the day's before dictatorial doctors) and munched. :munch:

Later on I used to roast them until dark brown and then ground them up for use as a coffee-substitute. I think that was/is done during war time in various coffee-deprived jurisdictions.

Next year I shall plant zucchini AND pumpkins.
(Silly me!)

I read somewhere that pumpkin seeds should be roasted and left outside for the squirrels to eat.
That is at variance with the general opinion that squirrels ought to be discouraged.

I thought that "tree-rats" should be an excellent source of meat protein, if one built a trap. But I am not sure of their status regarding parasites and such.
Cheers
