I know, I know. I was only using "caret missing" as an example of how things might be messed up at my end.

This never would have happened if they had real printed-on-wood-pulp papers in Bonavista.
I'm thinking of moving to somewhere bigger.
Like Toronto.

The internet's electrons are probably exhausted by the time they reach Bonavista...

You can't beat a real newspaper for a good read. It's why we still have books.

Also here in Bonavista we need paper to make soil so we can grow veggies On The Rock!

When I click on the (text) placeholders, the news article expands and contracts as I think it should.
So my problem is as if my laptop system is missing the caret characters that the web page expects to find; so it can't substitute the placeholders with the caret symbol.

I don't say that that is the cause, but it would be an explanation for what is, I suspect, a very local phenomena.

Yes, noticed that yesterday; the chevron arrows are missing in your images; and since it's easy to inspect elements with Firefox one can see that this one is supposed to "transform", in this case rotate 180 degrees. Well, no need to inspect to notice that, but to perhaps see what is going on. So far I think what I would think have been mentioned; page loading fully, extensions. If one is running script blockers and white listing cookies one can see all kinds of weird things on some pages, missing icons could be one of them. That said, Google News seems to be really simple/plain compared to other sites.

Bonavista is the Centre of the Known Universe.

People here really do talk about "Living on the rock". Those glaciers scraped off all the soil and dumped it in the ocean to make the Grand Banks.

Thanks Argus.
I am convinced that this is caused by some configuration of my local system.
There again, I am not concerned about that enough to go back to my latest system backup on a USB drive!

I had not considered Google News being simple. I now suppose "why not?".
I would think that "simple is good" when you are trying to aggregate from millions(?) of online news sources of differing standards.

I just started having the same upside down text and the errors in the left side interest list.
I just have the problem on one of my 3 computers and only in Firefox.
My Firefox is the latest version.

None of the solutions suggested help.
The one computer that is affected is my primary desktop unit.
Chrome, which I don't like to use displays the page correctly on this computer.

I hope Google finds a solution to this problem, or one of this Lounge readers find a solution.
Thanks.

Before you do any complex troubleshooting for this one.

Have you rebooted the computer and checked that it still behaves the same?
Does it affect all web sites, or just one or two?

Yes, the problem has existed for several days with many fresh starts.
The problem exists only on Google News.

That is very strange. Can you post a screenshot showing what it looks like

One thing you can try is to refresh Firefox settings.

I have attached a part of the Google New screen that shows the text issue.
Is only occurs on one computer and only in Firefox
All other web sites work just fine and links from this opening page work fine.

I have the latest version of Firefox and I have refreshed Firefox.
It only started about 5 days ago.

I was able to fix the problem.
I backed up my bookmarks, uninstalled Firefox, downloaded a new copy. I had to reset my Home Page to the Google News, but now it displays normally.
Mozilla Firefox even set my toolbars and configurations back from a record of the old settings when I logged in.
I don't know what was wrong, but it is now fixed.

You can say that again!
I'll give it a shot in my Copious Free(TM)

FWIW I still experience upsidedownness, after a clean re-install (from CD), win7HP updates, latest Firefox etc.

The cause of this problem is telling Fire Fox that you want to use your own fonts. Set them back to bog standard (in options) and the problem will disappear.

Hi.
I doubt that this could be the cause in my situation - although changing fonts may well trigger the problem elsewhere.
For one thing I am not even sure HOW to change fonts in Firefox.
And even if I had changed them accidentally by the time-honoured method of clicking randomly in a misunderstood screen, I can't see how I could have done that over several installations of FireFox, and of Windows.
I posted the original enquiry 18 months ago, and in the meantime have moved from a DELL Aspiron and Toshiba Tecra laptop to an Acer Travelmate P2, which move included a Win7 to Win10-2004 change, and fresh installation of of newer versions of Firefox.

That said, I just went and had a look at Google news (attached) and the inverted text is NOT apparent. But then, My Windows is different, my Firefox is different and, it seems to me, that the Google News page layout is changed. (I haven't been to Google news for a good six months at least).
Thanks
Chris
