Office 2016 prob with Word installation

Post by dasadler »

Actually, I have problems with Word and Outlook. I will address Outlook in another post.

My son shared his Office 365 license with me (which is permitted) and Office 2016 was installed on my Windows 10 computer that already had Office 2007.

After Office 2016 finished installing, I saw all my Office 2007 icons still pinned to the taskbar and remembered that I had read somewhere of Office 2016 being installed along side of previous versions of office. I thought maybe that I now had Office 2007 AND Office 2016. So... I clicked on the Word 2007 icon that was pinned to my taskbar and it seemed to launch a Word installation; I immediately thought that I had triggered an installation of Word 2007 so I panicked and started clicking on abort/stop/cancel at every pop up window because I realized Word 2007 was not there and did not want to reinstall it. So then I went to the Start Menu, found and launched Word 2016... it seems to want to start then aborts and 'notifies' Microsoft of the problem and will tell me if a solution is found. Then closes the program.

This may be the worst I have messed up in a while. Any thoughts on how to fix my Word 2016?

Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features.
Select Office 2007, and uninstall it.
Then select Office 2016, and select repair. You can try a quick repair first; if that doesn't work, try a full repair.
Best wishes,
Hans

Thanks Hans. I better hold off doing this until I can get Outlook 2016 working as I dare not risk losing Outlook 2007 just yet. BTW, when I looked in Control Panel > Programs and Features, I did see Office Enterprise 2007 however I could not find Office 2016 anywhere. I even looked in the start menu to see if there was any repair tool - no joy.

Where would I find the Office 2016 repair tool?

Office 365 is not listed in Programs and Features?

Is there a way to tell Word 2016 that my normal.dotm file is located in a different than expected folder?

Yes:
- Start Word.
- Select File > Options.
- Select Advanced in the navigation pane on the left.
- Scroll down to the General section.
- Click File Locations...
- Select User Templates and click Modify...

Good news and bad news... I did just that and discovered that during the Office 2016 installation, the file location was passed on to Word 2016. Bad news is that it does not recognize my normal.dotm

Oops - correction. Works fine.

Thank you for all the help - it seems my Office 2016 is running perfectly and, BTW, installation of Office 365 did NOT remove my Office 2007. Once I am satisfied that all my customizations are in place in the new office, I will feel safe deleting the old office.
