remove 'Welcome to Word' from Personal templates

Post by stuck »

New day, new horrors, i.e. I'm in the process of taming a Win 10 Office 365 machine. Current annoyance is in Word and when I click
File | New | Personal
there is a 'Welcome to Word' template that will not go away. Unpinning has no effect, the next time I restart Word it's pinned again. Setting the number of recent files to zero has no effect either, it is always displayed. I've tried opening it to see if 'taking the tour' it offers means it realises I'm not going to need th tour ever again but no, it's still there when I restart Word.

This template was not present on my Win 7 Office 365 machine. As yet my Googling has not turned up anything.

Any ideas how I can get rid of this pointless template?

Ken

Please can an Admin move this thread to Office General because I've got another gripe now, Excel is also showing the same pointless welcome template and one about making your first pivot table.

I guess the same junk will turn up in Powerpoint too.

Who at MS thinks this stuff is helpful?

For me, 'Welcome to Word' is listed under Featured, not under Personal.

Is the template present in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates, or whichever folder you set as your user templates folder in File > Options > Advanced > File Locations...?
Best wishes,
Hans

I suspect it's showing up in Personal because I set reg. keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\[officeApp]\Options\officestartdefaulttab DWORD value 1
so that File | New defaults to PERSONAL
HansV wrote:Is the template present in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates...
The one for Word was so I deleted it but the template still shows up in PERSONAL.

The Excel & Powerpoint welcome templates were in that folder. They too have been deleted but they still show up in PERSONAL.

The templates reappear in those folders if I open them via their place holder in PERSONAL. Looks like this is an exciting feature that's baked into this version of Office 365 (Version 1709 Build 8528.2147 Click-to-Run).

:sigh:

I fear you'll have to live with it for the moment.
You can post a suggestion to change this behavior in:

https://word.uservoice.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
https://excel.uservoice.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
https://powerpoint.uservoice.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Suggestions that receive many votes may be considered by Microsoft, and some are even implemented.
Best wishes,
Hans

It is at these sort of times that I can hear someone saying, "There's a lot to be said for LibreOffice"...

There certainly is, and I'm sure that LibreOffice fits the bill perfectly for many users. That it can open, edit and save Microsoft Office documents is a great advantage. But you can't build the kind of complicated applications that are possible in Microsoft Office with VBA, PowerQuery, etc.
Best wishes,
Hans

I'm still working in the bliss of Windows 7 and Office 2013. I am exposed to and run support everyday on Windows 10 and Office 2016 (and Office 365) from my company but personally I will stay on my current versions until I'm forced to upgrade. It's exactly these small "horrors" that I'm religiously avoiding. Maybe by the time I'm forced onto the newer versions Ken would have posted on *.uservoice.com and I can escape the nightmares. :grin:

Those odds sound too great to make it worth my while doing that but if I find I have a spare few mins one day I might give it a go. Meanwhile I've got bigger fish to fry.

Thanks,

Ken

Not any time soon but perhaps a return visit is in order as it appears it was Aug 2011 when I was last there.

Meanwhile, 'fry up' is what I feel befell my beloved Win 7 (previously Win XP) machine after the latest update to Office 365, which is why I'm having to tame a Win 10 box. I'm still about eight essential applications short of where I was this time last week. You know what it's like when you've had a PC for a long time, everything is just right. It's like an old pair of comfy shoes.

I am one that very seldom uses a template, but I am running the same version and when I go to Personal I do not get the welcome template.

I do however have 14 Welcome templates in the Roaming folder of my user account folder.
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates

Which is the same as Hans reported. I've not tested it but I'm confident that the 'Welcome' template would switch between PERSONAL and FEATURED if I toggled the reg. key I created from 1 to 0.
