Modifying Win10 privacy settings the easy way...

HansV has come across a very useful Win10 privacy tool that lets you disable the common but also deeply buried privacy settings throughout the OS.
For details and links for O&O ShutUp10, see this post...

Giveaway from DVDFAB for their Media Player 2 Pro, limited time offer.

The Pro version plays both DVDs and Blu-Rays and offers a Lifetime License. Supports both Windows (up to v10) and Mac.

You might have to be a "member" to get the offer. I am a "member" because I have DVDFab 9 - Lifetime License.

I downloaded it yesterday and played both DVD and Blu-Ray videos. No issues.

As a side note, I did try to get VLC to play Blu-Rays but was unsuccessful. Spent a few hours researching and trying many supposed solutions. Came to the conclusion that some Blu-Rays are so encrypted that they could not be played in VLC. But were playable in DVDFAB Media Player 2 Pro.

Bob

O&O Software, the makers of O&O Shutup10, have created an improved registry editor: O&O RegEditor.
Among its features: when you search for a keyword, ALL instances are listed.

I found this utility especially welcome since Microsoft's RegEdit has been broken in Windows 10 since the 1511 release: when searching for a keyword, it hangs if it is not found, or after the last instance has been found. Although this bug has been reported to Microsoft, they haven't bothered to fix it in any of the (public) updates released since 1511.
Best wishes,
Hans

D/L Sites cleaning up their act

Post by dasadler »

I am sure that I'm not the only person frustrated with all the 'crapware' that is bundled with otherwise free software. You always have to be diligent during the installation to avoid unwanted programs. I read some good news today about various D/L sites that are abandoning installers which have embedded 'extras'. Thought you might enjoy it - a quick read.

Is there a site that offers a paid subscription and delivers downloads without the crapware? If not, is it a business opportunity?

Seems to me that I'd pay a buck or two each time I downloaded an app to be relatively confident that no crapware would be pushed at me and that the site has been diligent in trying to avoid malware.

I've never been able to get the Outlook archive function to work the way I want (or at all, for that matter). I must have Googled alternatives (?). Anyway, somehow I came up with MailStore Home. I'm really happy with it, especially the search function. I've been able to dig up emails from years ago with this function.

Funny that this should crop up here now. It was only early June when there was a thread dedicated to Mailstore Home:

Yep! I followed that thread with interest and, as a result, downloaded/installed Mailstore (says its the portable version - although it's installed on my second HDD!). I'm pleased with it; Useful program that actually does what it says it will!

No need to apologise! Your entry in this thread corrects the fact it probably should have been cross-referenced here once that other thread had run its course.

For years I have been toying with ways of adding a keyboard & monitor to my laptop via a docking station, for when I am back in the office. But everything I looked at seemed too complex, took up too much space and was too costly.
Just recently I came across 'Mouse Without Borders'. Wow! Initially I installed it so I could quickly click on things on my laptop which usually sits next to my main computer screen & keyboard. Then I realized, when serious work needed to be done in the laptop, I could simply lift my laptop and put it directly in front of me, move the mouse across past the left side of the main screen and viola I was working in my laptop with a large screen and great keyboard. When finished, I just move the mouse past the right side of the screen and I'm back in my main computer.
So easy to install, works a treat, simply wonderful, and it's free. Thank you Microsoft staff. No docking station required - a great example of KISS in action.
Avagr8day, regards, Peter

TX for the entry Peter. Ken (Stuck) introduced us to this freebie here (on pg14) of this thread, but your post has made me look into this app again for my own personal reason. Cheers.

Here is an introductory demo video about this app and you can use the link to Kens post above to access the download for the app.

There's a caveat to add to the otherwise very handy 'Mouse Without Borders'.

It turns out that installing MWB assigns CRTL+SHIFT+S as its custom screen capture keyboard shortcut, which is fine unless you also have Photoshop, which uses CRTL+SHIFT+S as a shortcut for 'Save As'.

I haven't got MWB where I am at the moment (at work) so I can't find out if you can reassign MWB's screen capture shortcut to some other key combination so that CRTL+SHIFT+S once again behaves as you'd expect it to in PS.
