One minute wait between successive posts

Post by HansV »

We've had an increasing number of spam posts recently. The admins remove these as soon as they notice them, and ban the spammer. By the way, a big thanks to those of you who have notified the admins of spam messages.

To make it less easy to post a large number of advertisements in quick succession, we have increased the "flood control interval" from 15 seconds to 60 seconds. This means that you'll have to wait one minute after posting a message before you can submit the next one. This might be a bit irritating in some circumstances, but we hope that you'll understand why we had to do this.
Best wishes,
Hans

Does this also apply to edits to a post just made?

This is an edit.

Dopje was able to post a reply and edit it immediately, so apparently it doesn't apply to edits.

And it's 60 seconds after the successful "Submit" execution, not 60 seconds after the latest attempt to "Submit".
I just got pit-stopped and tried clicking "Submit" every ten seconds. The 60 seconds did not restart after each failed "Submit".
That's good.

Hi Hans,

Shouldn't this kind of alert be posted on the "Words From On High" board? It's a change on the way the Lounge operates.

Kind regards.

I could have posted the announcement in Words From On High, but since this change will have little or no impact on most users - it's very unusual to submit two posts within 60 seconds - I thought it wasn't really necessary. I did make the post "sticky" here in Lounge Matters, so that it stays at the top.
Best wishes,
Hans

There's an interesting coincidence. Bob asks/comments about him and he WAS here yesterday, according to his profile but didn't post anything.

The "Last Active" date and time is deceptive. If a member has subscribed to a daily or weekly digest, the sending of the digest also counts towards the user's activity.
Digests are usually sent just after the hour, so a last active time of, say, 10:02 might indicate the moment a digest was sent to the user.

Diego's last active time is among those, and I happen to know that he subscribes to the digests (he was the one who alerted us to the digest add-on).

The thought remains (even if geezerdom prevents me getting it right).

We've missed Diego and the wishes for the holiday season and new year are intended.

We've missed Gloria too. Wonder what happened to her?

Gloria E last logged in about two weeks ago, and she posted a few days earlier. She was online as Duchess843 at the Windows Secrets Lounge at the end of last week, so I assume she's OK.

I promise to be slower on responding to messages if you promise not to classify me as a spammer.

Maybe you can draw up a plan for a lounge device we can hook up to the server to send a small disciplinary electrical shock through the mouse or touchpad to those who send posts too fast. Then we can remove that nasty message.

I understand this, and deplore spam of all forms.
A suggestion:
Could some sort of trap be made to allow ONE (but no more) post to be made within 60 seconds, but ban repeat posts thereafter?

I tend to batch my responses, with the text and image links pre-established in a file "Emails.doc", so about once each session i get hit by the response "You cannot make a post so soon after ...".

I do not receive the caution more than once per (60-minute Free WiFi) session, so i suspect that allowing one repeat post before the portcullis descends would work.

I suspect that this sot of adjustment is not available for modification, except at the software level, in which case, i offer it, through the administrators, as a suggestion to the developers.

This technique would apply not only to people who brave the -235c wind-chill factor to use free WiFi at the library, but equally to loungers who "batch" their response to u/l during the lunch-break, and so on.

I suspect it all boils down to what we mean by "spam". In this case I'd define it as more than one repeated message in the interval, rather than one repeated message in the interval.

Cheers
Chris

We (admins) can only set a single interval; no fine-tuning is available.

I ran into this today. Unusual for me for sure but it was one of those days where I was making quite a few posts. Even so, it was no inconvenience to wait 60 seconds.
