Ctrl +C fails to copy to the clipboard

Post by Dave Davison »

For no obvious reason my recently purchased hp laptop suddenly fails to copy highlighted text to the clipboard using the assigned keyboard shortcuts Ctrl +C and Alt +V. Does this suggest the fault lies with the Windows 11 system or the Microsoft Office package which was installed after purchase at my local computer shop?  Thanks Dave

Does Ctrl+C fail in all applications, or just in Word?
Best wishes,

Albeit your snapshot shows as Alt-V for paste, I thought Ctrl-V was/is the standard paste key?

Hey - that's a clue. :thankyou: Dave's screenshot shows the CopyText command.
Ctrl+C should be assigned to the EditCopy command - that is the "standard" copy - instead of to CopyText.

And Ctrl+V is indeed the generic shortcut for Paste - in Word the EditPaste command.

Thanks for the comments /advice, when the fault first happened I searched through "Customise Keyboard" and - not being aware that Edit /Copy is obviously different from Copy Text I meddled with the settings only to learn the hard way that venturing into unfamiliar territory is not recommended.
However, after considering the points raised I am pleased to say normal service is resumed. [What is the purpose of Edit Text as opposed to Edit Copy?]
Many thanks Dave.

To be honest, I don't have the slightest idea what the CopyText command does.
Best wishes,

..............maybe that is why it is not assigned to anything by default.....Cheers Dave.

The default shortcuts for the CopyText and MoveText commands are Shift+F2 and F2, respectively.
https://www.howtogeek.com/230725/how-to ... -using-f2/
Select some text that you want to copy to another place (same document or a different one), press Shift+F2, click at the destination, and press Enter. This may be quicker than Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V, but harder to remember. Also, using F2 without the Shift key does the equivalent of Ctrl+X/Ctrl+V.

A possible advantage is if you already have something on the clipboard that you don't want to lose, because these commands don't use the clipboard.

Thanks Jay, another bit of - possible useful information - for somebody. I note that in W11 the clipboard stores 25 copied items but only pastes the latest one saved, can it be programmed to only store one item one wonders? Thanks Dave.

NOTE: if you use Win+V you get to choose which saved clipboard item is pasted.

If you still wish to only save one clipboard item go to Settings | System | Clipboard and turn off clipboard history.

Thank you JayP. Works nicely in Win10 Pro using MS 365! (Once I turned on clipboard history). There is the old saying that "we only use about 10% of an app's features" VERY TRUE!!!

:thankyou:

Bob

I started using Win+V when it was introduced in Win10 and continued on to Win11. I really like that feature as I often copy more than one item before using any.
