Formatting an External Hard Disk

I have a Samsung M3 1Tb external hard disk attached via a USB port. In W10 I can see and transfer files between it and my computer. However I want to clan it up properly by deleting everything on it. Then a fomat fails the the message "Wndows was unable to format the disk. Anyone help please?

By changing the format type to exFat I have solved the problem.
