facebook - with???

What does it mean when you go to facebook and see a post that says someone is with other people?

For example

Henry Jones is with Bill Wilson and 4 others

That post my be 12 hours old... but what does the 'with' mean? I doubt it means they are physically together... online at the same time, maybe?

I found the answer.

It is basically tagging someone in a post. To say you were with one or more of your friends click in the Status post box and a set of icons will appear at the bottom--the one that look like a silhouette will let you add who you were with in the post.

John, you may be the only person on the planet who hasn't heard of Facebook (if you aren't actually taking the piss ). https://facebook.com is currently the largest social networking site on the Internet.

The initial program was written by Mark Zuckerberg when he was a student at Harvard. According to the Wikipedia page,

A "face book" is a student directory featuring photos and basic information.

Zuckerberg was trying to consolidate all the (mostly paper) face books at Harvard into one online site. It nearly got him expelled.

Late to the game as usual

I am forced to have an anonymous facecrap page because we have had custody of our 5 year old great granddaughter (this past 4 1/4 years) and the social services (who washed there hands of everything 4 years ago) insisted we have one to see what the mother is doing as she has a mental illness and could be a threat. In the time that we have had it, I have never posted anything, but find it amazing that it sends me friend suggestions, most of which are people I don't, or wouldn't want to know, but occasionally it throws up old work colleagues, past business associates and even people I know that have moved to Spain, new Zealand etc. Despite the fact that all of my background information, age, location etc. are totally spurious.

The Algorithms that they use are really quite scary to come up with a match like this.

They can probably derive a lot of information from your IP address.

They also have an extensive network of other sites that share cookies, so that they can work together to analyse your internet behaviour.

A nice example of how services exchange information: I went to a performance of Stravinsky's L'Histoire du Soldat last night, in a venue called Radio Kootwijk. I had placed a reminder in my Google Calendar,
On the way to the concert, I opened Google Maps on my phone, and it spontaneously reported "34 minutes drive to Radio Kootwijk" and offered driving directions...

The performance was excellent. I didn't get a popup this time, but I sometimes get those after eating out at a restaurant or staying in a hotel.
