Off to the No Frills supermarket for a tray of boneless chicken breasts, 6 for under $6, so wrap two pairs in cling wrap and into the freezer they go.
The remaining two go into the George Foreman grill which, sad to relate, still bears the scars of the grilled salmon fillets from last weekend.
Not my grill; I'm in charge of cooking, she's in charge of clearing up, loading the dishwasher etc while I shuffle the cards.
Close inspection reveals that while shreds of salmon skin and flesh still cling to the grill, none of it has, as yet, turned grey or green.
Slap the chicken in and close the lid.
Pot of water on the stove on high.
Prepare the vegetables - cut the carrots slant-wise, chop the florets off the broccoli, discard the stalks because she doesn't believe in soups, or vermicomposting, and who wants to get caught on the subway Saturday night with two chunky stalks of broccoli, right?
While the carrots come to the boil, work on the crossword puzzle from today's Star.
Turn the chicken and drop the broccoli in the water, turn the heat down to medium.
Back to the crossword, while the smell of grilled chicken wafts through the condo, bringing She to the area.
"Oh", she says, hearing the chicken sizzling on the grill, "I thought you were going to barbecue it?".
"Yes", I respond, "but it seemed like too much work for two breasts, so I used the grill".
I wisely say nothing about its not being cleaned since last weekend; she can raise the issue if she wants to.
And she does.
"Did you clean it off" (here we go!) "because I squirted gobs of palmolive dishwashing detergent on it last Saturday night and never got around to cleaning it off".
