It's as if the bird is raising its right wing (on the left for the viewer) in a gesture of greeting: "Hi there".viking33 wrote:Still don't "get it."
(I don't think Photoshop is involved here)
Best wishes,

Re: Hi there!
Yes and yes again, no Photoshop involved (but I did use an image editor to crop and make a few minor adjustments to the contrast etc).HansV wrote:It's as if the bird is raising its right wing (on the left for the viewer) in a gesture of greeting: "Hi there".

The bird was soaring on the wind blowing in off the North Sea at Bempton Cliffs.

Re: Hi there!
It's an excellent photo, but I feel that the gannet is aerodynamically unstable...!

Re: Hi there!
You'd have been aerodynamically unstable in the strong wind that was blowing! It didn't bother the birds though they were soaring effortlessly, almost stationary, in the wind right at the top of the cliff / at path level so it was difficult not to get at least one interesting shot.

Re: Hi there!
Hi Ken
Great picture as usual, what sort of camera do you use for these is it a DSLR?
I have had every kind of camera going and can never really get a decent picture, I have just invested in my first DSLR type camera, the Nikon J1and the pictures are looking a little better already but even with the 30-110mm lens it does not zoom to far so I will have to wait for a new one to be released.

Re: Hi there!
I have a Canon 400D, which is a DSLR. The lens I used for this shot was a Tamron 55-200 F4.0/5.6, at the 200mm end. Given the strong wind and the moving subject I set the camera on shutter priority (1/1000sec). Can't remember what the camera set as the f stop.
Tell you what though, most other people there who had a camera with them had really serious kit that made mine look like a toy!
Ken,
PS, your Nikon J1 at 110mm will give a similar sort of zoom effect as my Tamron lens 200mm. Zooming beyond that point makes it very difficult to (hand) hold the camera steady enough to avoid blurred pictures.

Re: Hi there!
That is a cool photo!
I've been enjoying my Nikon 5100... I'll have to post some photos. They're not as cool as this one... but nifty. I got a photo of a moth that looks like a big yellow and black buzzy bee... I'll see if I can find it. LOL

Re: Hi there!
Thank you for your encouragement. It is a novel picture but I reckon the real reason it won was that the others in the list were all fairly average.
If you look at some of the other mini-comps on CiC you'll see the standard is frequently way above my level. For example, my previous attempt came in second from last

IMHO the only other decent photo was the bridge and lake - but it obviously was posed!stuck wrote: ooo, err, my picture won a mini competition.
