Proposal for a better pop-up display of Smilies.

Post by ChrisGreaves »

I respectfully submit that the pop-up display of smilies ("View more smilies") might be better-generated.

If at least the smilies were distributed randomly (and hence in a different sequence on each issue) it would save ME a lot of time, because no matter where I start my search (at the first pane or at the fourth pane) or whether I leap in at the second or third, the pane holding the smilie I want is always the fourth pane presented to me.
A random distribution ought to bring me the desired smilie on the second or third pane, and in some cases, the first pane.

And while we are at it, why is a single smilie not called a smily? Just dropping that trailing "s" is so Ethelredian.
Thank you, Chris :soccerball: (1)
(1)I decided not to waste my time looking for the :thank you: smiley. C

We cannot randomize the display, sorry.

The initial display shows the most used smilies - thankyou is one of them:

Is it possible to provide a search field for smilies?

...a search field for smilies?...
I'm not an Admin but I doubt it. Plus, despite Chris's lament, it's not that hard to find the one you want, they are in alphabetic order.

The only modifications we can apply are:
- Specify which ones are in the 'most used' list.
- Move them around (I sorted them alphabetically by hand :hairout:)

If the  smiley were used more often would it automatically move to the Initial Display?

Also, I couldn't find it in the View More Smilies window either . The only way I can find to display it is to type

Just asking for a friend.

In the Quick Reply box at the bottom of a thread, you have to type out the smiley codes yourself. If you click Full Editor & Preview, you'll see a pane with popular smileys (it's fixed - the Admins can edit it if they want to add or remove smileys), with a link to view more:

Hi Ken. "it's not that hard to find the one you want, ..." is true only if you know the alphabetic code for the smiley, in which case you have no need of the smiley panes.
It is much faster to type the smiley (colon, string, colon) and have the hands not leave the keyboard, than to reach for the mouse, slide, click, slide, click ...
Roughly half of the smilies I use I type by hand, not mouse.

As a side note that is why sometimes I come across unexpected smilies because I type what I think should be the string ("scold") and get what appears to be "nag".
Cheers, Chris :basket:
PS> See? I've just done it again and got the NBA instead of "tearinghair").
PPS> I meant, of course "hairout" which is, I see, different from "scratch".

Hi Graeme. I thought that the  smiley was an indication that some Loungers were overweight, and had trouble doing push-ups.

We discussed a lot of this in the early days of Eileen's Lounge:
The best smiley feature ever to be proposed .... by Chris Greaves and Compiled Smilies List by Don Wells.

I know, I know. Also ""Not in your lifetime, Chris"", but I won't have run out of fresh taglines until 2046, so a routine post from a mere 14 years ago cannot be used as a :refusal:. Or a :rebuttal:

I just read over a couple threads where Chris Greaves was discussing emojis and how they can be used or created. In one of those threads I downloaded a spreadsheet full of emojis and the code to create them. I tried using those codes to insert the emoji code into a Word document and an Excel document. In both cases the emoji did not appear, only the code. I went to the test area of this forum and those same codes worked in that the code did make the emojis appear. So my question is, if I were to use those codes in either a Word or Excel file, what must I do to make the emojis show up in place of the code? :bash: :bash: :bash:

Our smileys work only in Eileen's Lounge.

You can insert emoji in Word and Excel (or in a Lounge post) by pressing the Windows key+. (point, dot, period).
An emoji panel will pop up. You can also search for keywords:

Yes Thanks Hans, I knew that about the Windows key and the period. In my last post I pasted the code from that emoji Excel file I downloaded. But after reading this I looked and saw that it is one I could have selected from all those here. So, I guess that is why it worked in here.

I have to ask this, even though I did know about the Windows Key+., I searched on how to insert emojis into a Word document, thinking I could use that code in the Excel spreadsheet. What I found and watched a youtube video on is I should be able to bring up an emoji keyboard in Word by adding an addin. I do not see anything like was shown in that video because I have nothing that says addin. On the Insert tab in Word, am I supposed to have an addins group? I don't have one and just curious as to why I don't.

Legacy add-ins will be displayed in a separate Add-ins tab.
For 'modern' add-ins, there is a button on the right-hand side of the Home tab of the ribbon. I don't know why you'd need an add-in if you can press Windows key+. to display the emoji keyboard.
Best wishes,
Hans

You're right, I'm not going to use it. I just wondered why I didn't have it since, I believe, the video was relatively recent, it referred to MS 365. Thank you.
