There's a clair-obscur effect that happens on an eight day old waxing gibbous Moon each month called the Lunar X. It's caused by the shadows and the illumination of a couple of overlapping crater rims. If you're not in the right place on the right day then you miss it. Tonight with the Moon sitting photogenically next to the Pleiades, the event happened at 23:30 UT and was visible from Western Europe. The clouds were intermittent prior to the time but I set up and pointed my telescope at the Moon in preparation. Then the clouds thickened. Then at just the right time the clouds cleared and I captured my first Lunar X.
