pleasant surprise

Post by stuck »

I got a letter from the tax man today. I thought it was going to be a boring 'notice of coding' but no! It was to tell me I'd paid too much tax last year and they owe me a sizeable sum.

:thewave:

I presume this happy situation has arisen because my tax code wasn't adjusted correctly when I retired late last summer so I was over-paying tax from that date until the end of the tax year.

The :money: will come in handy as I'm about to buy a new laptop :joy:

... but perhaps not until after you have read Will Fastie's new summary?
Cheers, Chris.
P.S. If you'd like to try a second-hand HP15, it's almost time for me to buy a new one ... C.

Well done, Ken!

Makes over paying seem like a windfall doesn't it? Did they pay you accumulated interest?

Seriously, congratulations on the windfall.

Nice to get a windfall.

I got rid of my company car at the end of March so that I would start the new tax year without one and so that they don't continue taxing me for it come August when I retire, when I will be a poor pensioner. The Transport Manager said I didn't need to because the HMRC would alter my code accordingly in August. I said that was a false assumption!

Both my wife and her sister, working for different organisations in different roles, were suspicious of their pay over a period of time. As English is their second language, I helped them both to write letters to their employers. In each case, the employer conceded that they had underpaid, and in fact, had underpaid many employees. They were repaid the back pay, enough to buy a number of laptops.

Getting money back from a tax office ... can't remember those days.

During my early days here in Norway, the tax office told me in no uncertain terms ... 'If I did not advise what assets I had external to Norway then they would decide and tax me accordingly'.
