Getting faster
My internet connection slowed down by about 25% a few months ago, and my ISP didn't seem at all interested in fixing it, eventually I gave up and ordered a new connection from another service provider.
They installed the modem and router yesterday, and I am VERY pleased with the speed.

At least you have a reasonable upload speed! (Roll on our new router installation...)steveh wrote: This is my work PC!!

Re: Getting faster
Hmm, I've just confirmed what I already know, my work connection is highly variable:
About 5 mins ago Down was about 6.5Mb/s and Up was over 8Mb/s.
About 1 min ago Down was only 3.25 and Up was 5.7.

Re: Getting faster
At work, it's always possible that someone or something else was uploading or downloading while the test was taking place, no? I can't believe the SpeeTest.net software can manipulate exclusive use of your company connection!stuck wrote:Hmm, I've just confirmed what I already know, my work connection is highly variable:

Interesting, though, that your upload speed is higher than download - usually it's the other way round...

Re: Getting faster
It is highly likely someone else was doing something during both tests, I work at a reasonably large site and it is lunch time.
As for the UP/Down being the wrong way round, if I was brave I'd go upstairs and suggest they plug the cables in the other way round so we could all enjoy a faster ride Seriously though, I think our connection is supposed to be symmetric.

I don't think Argus normally pings Sydney...StuartR wrote:A 344mS ping is seriously slow, is that normal for you?

Re: Getting faster
To Sydney, yes. I don't do tests that often, but to the guys down under it (via SpeedTest) often goes over 300ms.StuartR wrote:Argus,

Here, usually 3-4 ms.

Re: Getting faster
As further evidence of my highly variable internet connection speed I can inform you that the notification of Argus's reply to Stuart's post arrived 12mins before the notification of Stuart's post.
Alternatively, Argus is travelling faster than the speed of light

Re: Getting faster
The download speeds shown by SpeedTest.net always make me laugh - I have a 10 Mbps cable line! The figure hovered at about 6 Mbps then shot up to the ludicrous number above.
Think Broadband's speed tester seems to be about the only reliable one for download speeds - in the UK, at least.
Curious how the upload speed is always pretty consistent.

Yes, John, I've noticed that SpeedTest.net seems to be a little bit optimistic, but in your case it's three times!John Gray wrote:The download speeds shown by SpeedTest.net always make me laugh ... We have a site here that is very often used when people check their speeds, ISPs etc. and you can pick one of five cities. Usually there's a difference around 5-15% compared to SpeedTest for the same city on the download, but up to 25% on the upload, and I think that's within the difference that one can expect between servers etc., at least for the download speed.
But some do the tests with different protocols etc. it seems. Before they created the site I mentioned, there was widely used software that did the same tests, but also some other, pings etc. and it still works. And with that one I get slightly lower download, and quite a bit slower on the upload, compared to SpeedTest, but closer to the online version mentioned above.
I've not tested Think Broadband's speed test since it requires Java.

Yes, Ken, we've noticed that that can happen up here, especially on rainy days in the autumn. (I wish.)stuck wrote:Alternatively, Argus is travelling faster than the speed of light
You don't have to reply to this, my reply to your next post is already in the tubes, somewhere.
Though, when we used ADSL and telephone line, we could get a weather effect it seemed, which was highly volatile.
