Digitizing European paintings to track climate change

Post by ChrisGreaves »

Scientists confirm long held theory about what inspired Monet
:artist: Turner, Whistler and Monet thrived in smog!

As I understand the article, your thread title is inaccurate.

They were tracking the change in visual pollution, which was rife in London at the time - the famous pea super.

But that isn't necessarily to do with climate change.

Thanks Geoff.
This is excellent news.
It means I might have mastered the art of attention-grabbing newspaper headlines!

BTW, was a pea super a sort of souper-soup-like fog?

Agreed; the study was on the impact on fog/smoke on the artists of that school, and the change in paintings across time and across space (London/Paris) shows correlation.

No artist I, but I understand more how an arty-type could look at a Monet (say) and say "That was in his 1910 period" and be reasonably correct.
Cheers, and thanks for reading the article!

Damn autorrect!1

I was just today reading about the London fogs (not dogs, thank you autocorrect) in Bill Bryson's At Home. I'm enjoying the books. He mentions Sherlock Holmes having to light a match during the day.

The London fogs get a good coverage in literature as well as painting.

Agreed, but does that digit "1" signify your first mild curse-word of the day?

I am currently wading through Bitesized Audio Classics hosted by Simon Stanhope. Most of the stories are 30 minutes, period 1890-1910; ghost, mystery, horror.

His biographies surprise me. I didn't know that A. J. Alan was a confederate of Alan M Turing; nor that E.F.Benson wrote anything other than social satire (Mapp & Lucia), and ...

I'd volunteer, but at my age I'd have to insist on a lounge.
