Spiles - as in tree-tapping

Post by ChrisGreaves »

I could spent this month's pension on tree-tapping supplies, or I could DIM.
I rather fancy DIM.
My neighbour has a maple tree whose seeds I harvest each year, and we get on well together. The tree is right on the fence line. I have seventeen Aspen trees. I have a shed and a toaster oven that I can use as a slow-boiler. I understand that 40 gallons of sap yields 1 gallon of syrup, and that's maple trees. I know that Oleander sap is highly toxic , but the nearest Oleander shrubs are 7,076 Km away in San Diego.

I have decided to make my own spiles from some spare polythene tubing that I have.

I welcome comments and suggestions from anyone who has harvested, or tried to harvest, sap from backyard trees.
Thanks, Chris
