Need Effective Strategies for Finding a Home for a Good Cat

Post by BobH »

Knowing that we have cat lovers here, I thought I'd seek the wisdom and experience of the group.

Recently, a neighbor moved to Florida. Although he planned to take his cat with him, the cat left when the movers arrived and did not return until after the neighbor had to depart. Before leaving, he told me of his dilemma and left food, litter box, travel cage, etc. with me asking that I feed it if it returned and to find it a home.

Kat showed up hungry several days later and accepted food and attention from us. She now comes and goes through the doggie door and is generally an excellent companion. Why, then, do we seek to find her a home, you ask.

Allergies. Although I have no known allergies to dogs, I have a very pronounced (and medically proved) allergy to cats, as does my daughter who visits weekly. I have had nosebleeds more and more frequently since Kat came to stay.

We can't bring ourselves to take her to the animal shelter for fear of what might result. So far, we've found no acquaintance who is positioned to adopt.

Kat is about 2 years old. She is solid black (beautifully so) and has been spayed but not de-clawed. She spends much of her time outdoors but also likes to come inside, although she does not seek much personal petting or other attention. She is very calm - especially given her youth - and altogether a good companion. She gets along well with our 10 yo miniature dachshund (though I cannot say what she would do around less sedate canine company). Were it not for the allergies, we would just enjoy her company.

Any thoughts?

My first thought would be to seek advice from the vet who normally cares for your dog. If you tell her the story you write here I would hope you might get some compassionate advice and/or recommendations.

We have a local area group called the Animal Rescue League and it accepts ALL types of domestic animals. It does NOT put any of these animals "down" but will care for them and try to arrange adoptions for them. I wonder if there is a similar group in your area?
You must be careful not to place them with just any so called rescue group, since some will only house the animals for a certain ( short ) length of time and then euthanize them. Most ASPCA groups will not euthanize their "guests."
I would check into that idea.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have already talked to my vet. They do a marvelous job of placing both cats and dogs. We have a friend who works at the local rescue and they are so overrun that they must euthanize if they can't find homes quickly. I'm continuing to seek other alternatives, too.

Hi Bob

Unless I am missing something why don't you speak to the original owner and get the cat shipped out to them? A quick search has turned up this http://handyshippingguide.com/specialis ... /flflorida" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The company I work for has a classified ads section on the intranet and I frequently see people posting animals that they need to find a good home for. I used it once myself when I got a stray cat and now I feel real good about what happened to the cat.
