When 800 numbers first started, they were a means for a retailer, manufacturer, etc. to pick up the tabs for service calls – etc. The caller didn’t get charged for the call, which at that time was based on mileage. It was a service to the customer.
Today, with the preponderance of phones, being cell phones, now there are two charges – a mileage based charge to the “800†number, and a minutes based charge to the user.
If you have a land line and a cell phone, be sure you make your “800 – 877†calls on your land line.
If you don’t have a land line and are anticipating an hours long call to India for tech support, you may want to check out
“Lucy Phone†– which will wait on hold and give the called number a number to call you back on.
