If football is too complicated, try the more genteel game of cricket. The rules are easy. Search Google for 'cricket as explained to a foreigner' and you get lots of hits, e.g.:

Oh come, come, Ken. I might be Australian, but I'm not that stupid!
I know that it is Soccer where there are lots of hits, because the players (men, mainly, funnily enough; not the women) are the ones who lie on the ground writhing in pain and clutching one or both of their shins, knees etc. until the Umpire turns his attention to the other player

And in Cricket there are practically NO hits, as any fule kno. In Cricket they basically stand around waiting for the afternoon tea bell.

I once played in a game of cricket at the high school hostel where I lived, and they sent a housemaster out to tell me it was time to brush my teeth and go to bed.

Cheers
Chris

I must confess that as an Aussie, having been weaned on the AFL code, I do feel somewhat cheated out of the award-winning performances I get to see in soccer:

I think the Aussie's are assuming that its 'Aussie Rules' they are playing and not soccer

For those not of Australian pedigree ...this helps to understand, that is  if anyone is interested

My thoughts about football: it's not cricket, on the other hand neither is cricket (all the time, we have learned).

A certain Mr. Ronaldo in Portugal vs. Morocco, the other day (as far as I know, players calling for VAR, this new-fangled video assistant referee, should end up with a yellow card), anyhow, after this?

Most Blatant Dive Ever? (Old one, and true, there were some things going on before.) Or will we see something new during this world cup?

And how about this, same game as the first one, Portugal vs. Morocco; "Pepe", also in the Portuguese team.

Or, Brazil's Neymar, most recently in Brazil vs. Costa Rica ...

They must be made of candy-floss, glass and porcelain. They are all generating a lot of memes though.

The principle, two teams kicking a football around a field is fine, and there can be quite some entertaining episodes, though, depending on preferences, it can be really boring (when nothing happens); but when the game has evolved to include players with salaries comparable to small countries, hooliganism, political statements during the game and Oscar winning acting, it is not fun.

That said I may change my mind depending on how it goes for Sweden.

By the way, some football games (football tables) have changed to match these changes.

Congratulations. Now that is something I would enjoy watching (until AI reaches the level that it mimics the behaviour mentioned above).

Yep!
I think he was a bit ticked off because he had to walk right up to me. I was staring across a few miles to the Darling Escarpment, homesick, and lost in thought!

Probably a synonym of "foot":

"To put someone on the wrong soccer"
"He put his soccer in his mouth"
"To shoot yourself in the soccer"
"I wouldn't touch it with a ten-soccer pole"
etc.
Best wishes,
Hans
