Actually I wasn't, and won't be. I only came out today because Deer Park Library had two Inter library loans on hold for me (from Regina University of all places).
My hip is playing up. Or down, and I am walking, when I can walk, with a limp.
I spent Sat/Sun/Mon indoors building Turing Machines (a sedentary exercise) and , of course, my noted absence from the internet via WiFi has caused a ripple.
I received a text from a pal in Sydeny⁽¹⁾ at 3;30pm yesterday, a mere two hours after it happened here, and what? Three in the morning there? What kind of a ghoul prowls the airwaves at 5 in the morning looking for Gloom Alarum and Despondency on the other side of the world?

I suppose I should reply to him too ....

I sat down and wrote an essay on the fact that
(1) I don't have a radio at home
(2) The TV is good only for watching VHS movies and DVDs
(3) I refuse to pay what seems like half my miserable pension for an Internet hookup.
(4) I collect a free copy of The Toronto Star from Ryerson University each morning - but only on days when I can walk.

There's more, but you get the idea.
I almost was late for the concert at 12;10 at Yorkminster Park because someone from Ottawa left me a voice-mail (I usually check vm first thing each morning around 4am), and I was only checking vm at 11 because I thought that Blind Michael who I met at Friday's concert at St Andrews might want to walk hand in hand with me to today's concert from the subway station, but it wasn't Micheal it was Ottawa and so I felt I had to reply to him before a flood of ELers descended on me all demanding to be fed at Fran's Diner just around the corner, and ....

I think I'll go home and have a cuppa and a lie-down.

P.S. It feels nice to be loved, if that's what it is. Or missed, if that's what it is instead.

I used to meet my canoeing buddy up by Finch, but not recently.

Is the drought broken?

The media, of course, publish only the bad news, and after a week, even bad news is no longer news.

Although my guess is that if Cape Town DID get some rain the weeds would shoot up pretty quickly, and as they say "If it weeds, it leads", right?

Upon hearing the news yesterday, my first thought was a prayer for your safety.

As for the hip, I had one of mine replaced about 10 years ago. The recovery was less than 2 weeks. The pain relief was and continues to be a Godsend. We have the best man in the US for hip and knee replacement practicing less than a mile from where I sit. Given the nature of medical practice in the GWN, I don't know what your wait time might be; but if desperation strikes, I'm certain they can fit you in here.

My heart goes out to the people of Toronto over this senseless tragedy and loss of lives. I certainly hope our own favorite Toronto son, Chris, is safe and well.

Hi PJ, and thanks for your thoughts, so cruelly terminated before that thread could get hijacked(grin).

As indicated in an earlier post this afternoon, I am safe (and more about that much later) but Not Well at all.
My right hip is hindering me. I never was hip, and am to this day still nerdy.
I have spent a few days sitting at home, oblivious of the world outside, unaware that a\ few of the world's population were worried about me.
Why I'll never know.
But there you are.
To make things worse (here comes Eyore again), right at the time when I don't feel like walking out (on account of the hip), the weather turns relatively fine (say 13c today, I think) and I spend my days and night building Turing Machines in MSWord, and my nights lying in bed staring at the ceiling and wondering whether it would be acceptable to allow ranges of symbols in the column headings, or to implement a Debug.Assert type of statement in my TM interpreter.

Only thyme will tell, as herb used to say.

P.S. I AM in good spirits and look forward to meeting with you next time i am in Florida.

How much post-operative ice cream do I get?

I don't know that it is the actual ball-and-socket.
I am keeping a detailed log in preparation for my booked visits to GP Dr and his mate - a foot-wizard-the-podiatrist.

It might be a recurrence of Perthes from when I was 4, but I doubt it.
It might be 66 years accumulation wear and tear as a result of now having one leg 1cm longer than the other (would you believe it, not only that, but one leg is 1cm shorter than the other too, a double-whammy⁽¹⁾ if ever there was one)
It might be the accumulation of stress after lugging up to 16 lbs of books plus a 6 lb laptop in a shoulder bag three times a week to and from the Library.
It might be good old-fashioned arthritis.
It might even be a psycho-somatic (operative syllables "psycho") .reaction to someone who could end up of Premier of Ontario June 7th, but I dussn't go into that here.

Bottom line: Let's wait until after my 9:15 and 9:30 appointments tomorrow

Me too.
Immobility was not a future I envisaged six years ago when i moved downtown.

Hip problems are expensive.
The pharmacist sold me a bottle of Tylenol Arthritis and a tube of Cream.
I realise now I may have to learn four MORE words in Spanish ...

I take the subway now to get up to St Clair, instead of walking; that's another $2.10 each way.

Hi Chris,

Glad to hear you were unaffected.

I'll just post here since you ask about it. We had some rain last week and then some good showers today which will resume tomorrow. Towards the weekend we are expecting another 'smaller' cold front with more showers. So far so good. I've seen more rain in the last two weeks than for a long, long while and its a positive start to our wet season. It will take a whole season of good rains to dent this drought, but we are positive. The residence of the Western Cape are improving in their water consumption limits. I see the attached report tells that we have lowered the consumption more than the days past. We are still a little over the ideal target but we are close. Water restrictions are still on a high level and each person has a max of 50 liters per day. Its a bit of a drudge, but understandable and respected given the dire scenarios we face otherwise.

I too have one leg shorter than the other and one longer than the other . . . by almost 3/4". The docs and I believe that it was this condition which caused the hip joint degeneration over a lifetime. I have osteoarthritis as well. Trust me when I say that the pain relief is more than worth it, even if you have to forego ice cream.
