old-style connection for HP keyboard?

Post by mishmish3000 »

Hello! I gave a friend an older HP desktop and keyboard... unfortunately, her cat destroyed the keyboard (you don't want to know). We've got a replacement keyboard but we need an adaptor.

The PC is old (probably 2000 or 2001) and the keyboard plugged in with a round end on the cable, not a flat USB like what most PCs have now... is there an adaptor where we could plug in a new keyboard's USB cable into a round cable that will go into the older PC? Think new keyboard + old PC.

Any ideas would be appreciated. And no, nothing mean done to the kitty. He's old. He has been banned from the computer room.

Thanks MishMish3000
:thankyou:

You need something like this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-USB-PS-2 ... B0006BA2SI
Google for USB to PS/2 adaptor to find something local.

You need a USB Keyboard To PS/2 Port Adapter. Available from many computer/electronics stores, and also online. See How to Use a USB Keyboard in a PS/2 Port.
Best wishes,

I would point out that some of the most recent Microsoft USB keyboards don't and won't work with a PS/2 port on a PC. There is a note in the accompanying 'booklet'. This may be the case with new Dell keyboards, too.

What John has pointed out makes me think that you might be better off looking or an old keyboard. Do you know of any local recycling projects? Or how about a local school or business? I bet they'll have one just lying around that they'll be more than happy to give you.
