Any chance of a sticky for "toolbar-free" downloads?

Post by John Gray »

It can occasionally be quite difficult to get a software download which does NOT include a needless toolbar or download manager, or some other unwanted options, so it strikes me that having a well-maintained 'sticky' list of links for information, and rubbish-free download, for various pieces of software would be a Good Thing.

Such software as:
  • CCleaner
  • Defraggler
  • Abobe Reader
  • Adobe Flash Player for Firefox
  • Adobe Flash Player for Internet Explorer
  • Foxit Reader
immediate spring to mind, but there are many others.

Or perhaps this facility exists somewhere else?

The list would contain wildly different programs. And since links might change over time, such a thread would be hard to keep up-to-date.

We think it's better to provide such links in the individual threads about updates to software.
Best wishes,
Hans

It might detract from the original purpose of the existing sticky post for Best FREE Software (Used and Rated by Loungers) but would not that thread be suitable home for such notifications?

If Loungers are willing to edit their posts to provide links to "toolbar-free" downloads, they are very welcome to do so!

But somehow it seems unlikely to me that Adobe Reader would end up in a thread about best free software...

Hans

It might, if it were considered 'the exception that proves the rule'?

One way to find out is to check on the 'Hall of Shame' -

That is certainly a useful list to have (thanks!), but it doesn't provide links to the "extras-free" downloads where available.
Best wishes,
Hans

Interesting list. Perhaps the question should be what free software DOESN'T come with something bundled in!

Interesting thread!

The ubiquitous yahoo crap has made me more wary - and weary - of their product. I wonder if there isn't some way to start a rebellion that would make it clear to yahoo clients that their business practices are onerous and that their adverts will be ignored. Yes, I realize that most computer users aren't aware enough to join such a rebellion, but I wonder if the quick minds and deep intellects around here couldn't come up with ways to send the message, loudly and clearly, that this kind of pushing brings negative results.
