Does anyone have any suggestions for opensource and / or free (no nagware) GIS software?
I have found a few, but they seem to focus on being a viewer of files rather than being comparable to ArcGIS. I have an evaluation copy of ArcGIS that I can use for 60 days, so have enough time to do my current batch of assignments. I'm baulking a bit at paying AU$270 for an academic licence to complete the rest of my course.

I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for, but this site has a load of stuff, as does this one. Maybe so many that just choosing will make you late for your assignment...

Thanks Jon,
I found those two pages and had a look at a couple. I will investigate further when time (and need) permits.
I was hoping for a personalised review, if anyone had any experiences and recommendations.
