Is my hard drive failing?

Post by jmt356 »

I ran two scan disks, one on 7.9.17 and one on 7.14.17. What alarms me is that 28 KB in bad sectors was found on 7.9.17 and 40 KB in bad sectors were found on 7.14.17. Is this an indication of a failing hard disk?

Here are the complete logs:

The total number of bad clusters is now 10 (40 kB) on a total number of 152,528,127 (about 581 GB). That is negligible. I don't think there is any need to worry. But it won't hurt to check every month or so.
Best wishes,
Hans

But the issue is the increase in bad clusters from Check Disk 1 to Check Disk 2, which is indicative of a failing hard drive, isn't it?

Plus, about every third time when trying to wake the computer from hibernation, errors display.

The increase is hardly worrying. At this rate, it would take about 700,000 years before all clusters have failed. It's only time to start thinking about replacing the hard disk when the number of failed clusters starts rising rapidly and becomes a significant percentage of the total.

What kind of error messages do you see when you try to wake the computer from hibernation?
Best wishes,
Hans

I don't recall, but what I do know is that on Friday evening, after I performed a scan disk, the computer never got to the point in the scan disk that states “Windows has finished checking your disk. Please wait while your computer restarts.” Rather, it only reached “CHKDSK is verifying free space (stage 5 of 5).”

The computer stayed frozen with that message for over a day. Eventually, I forced shut down, but upon restarting the computer, I got an error saying that there were errors on the hard drive and that a check disk was highly recommended. The check disk automatically launched and again only got to the point in the scan disk that states “CHKDSK is verifying free space (stage 5 of 5)," but never got to “Windows has finished checking your disk. Please wait while your computer restarts.”

I will post the most recent scan disk logs.

There is no record of the scan disk performed on 21 July or today 23 July.

I tried looking for both "Chkdsk" and "Wininit" in the Source column in Application under Windows Logs in Event Viewer.

What does that mean?

No event was logged because the event apparently was not completed.
If I were you, I would spring for a new HD. They are pretty inexpensive these days and I'm not sure I would want to wait for the "other" shoe to drop.

The problem is it is difficult to find standard hard drives these days. I always purchased from Crucial.com, but they now only sell SSDs, which for the size I need (1 TB), are not cheap (around $300). It will take some research to find the right standard hard drive.

I don't know where you are located but that's not true here in the UK. A simple Google search for '1TB HDD' turns up dozens of hits. Here's a page from a UK site that I've bought from in the past:

Same thing with my quick search that showed 1 TB HDD for $49.00 US.
NEWEGG.COM & AMAZON.COM.
Western Digital and Seagate.

P.S. that's why, as stuck said, it's always nice to post your general location in your Lounge profile.
