Web of Trust add-on privacy issues

Post by TonyE »

I know some here use the Web of Trust (WOT) add-on for safer browsing purposes.

Reports have emerged from Germany that they are selling details of browsing history, from which it has been possible to identify individuals.

Further details available here - http://www.ghacks.net/2016/11/01/browsing-history-sold/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

For those who speak German, the original articles on this are:
http://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/netzwelt/ ... tz100.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
https://www.kuketz-blog.de/wot-addon-wi ... ausspaeht/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There's a moral to this. ONLY install software that is absolutely essential for your needs.

Thanks Tony!

I tried finding further info in English and the actual NDR (Nord Deutscher Rundfunk) TV program, but no luck.

It is however not just a Firefox add-on, but also available for

Apple Safari
Google Chrome
Internet Explorer
Opera

(on that basis, I moved the thread out of Mozilla to the Security forum)

There are a few hits on Youtube if searching for NDR and WOT, but they are in German and aren't the actual TV program.
Cheers, Claude.

Just disabled WOT. Very disappointing. Thanks Tony.
