can someone explain the difference in my Gmail IMAP settings.

My understanding of this setting is:
Auto-Expunge On - your client will connect to Gmail and delete immediately
Auto-Expunge Off - the deletion (at Gmail) will not take place until your client next synchronises with Gmail.
So, if you 'check for new messages' every 10 minutes, it could be up to 10 minutes before the email is fully deleted.

Thanks Leif, the reason I asked was, I used to use pop for my Gmail emails in WL Mail & now in Thunderbird portable & could happily delete any message knowing it was still on Gmail's All Mail folder.
