Is there any *real* competition for Outlook?
I mean all the Contacts, Calendar, Notes, Email client etc.
I've used Eudora, good email, but not much else.
I've seen Lotus Notes (yick! not very compatible with anything but itself (and other Lotus stuff, I guess.)
I use GMail but that's web based...
Is there anything out there that "does it all" as a stand-alone product ala Outook?

Re: MS Outlook competition?
If you need all the components, Outlook is probably your best bet. The components are well-integrated, and Outlook works together with the other Office applications.
Windows Live Mail, the (free) successor to Outlook Express, has e-mail, contacts, feeds and a calendar. It doesn't have tasks and notes, though.
Mozilla Thunderbird (free) offers e-mail and contacts, and there's a calendar add-in Lightning.

"I use GMail but that's web based..."
While it is true Gmail is web based, you can also sync it to your computer. You can use it on-line or off-line.
It took awhile for me to get use to the way Gmail handles mail and contacts and searching. . . . but after about 3 months, I just don't miss Outlook.
After using Ol for many years, At least for me, Gmail is working very nicely.
Give it a try. . . . don't give up too soon, just because it 'just doesn't work like OL" Once you learn the 'flow of Gmail' I think you will like it.
Now, of course, many don't like Google because they think they are gathering too much information.
Well.....I'm just not that important. If they knew everything about me. . ..it would be pretty boring. . . .

Even if you don't mind Google knowing things about you, you may still want to be careful with Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Documents etc. Everything is stored on web servers. For example, if you store details about your bank accounts there, and if somebody manages to hack Google's servers, you could be in big trouble.

I guess I was talking about what belt size I wear. . . .
I have taken a pretty careful stance about bank and etc info on my computer. I do know we still put trust in the companies that we deal with that they will at least TRY to keep their end safe.
I know there is still danger. I have bought from a company online for the last 10 years with no problems. Yet last year they were hacked and 2 of my credit cards were compromised.
So. . . thanks again. Just for the records my belt size is. . . . .

Thanks for the replies, gentlmen. That's kind of what I thought the situation was/is.
I quess Outlook it will remain.
Hmm, what do Ubuntu, Red Hat etc. use?
Also, I thought it interesting that Sun's OpenOffice had no email/pim app.

Re: MS Outlook competition?
You know , I had forgotten about http://projects.gnome.org/evolution/.
I remember that I had tried it out quite awhile ago, and I don't remember just why it didn't work for me. But maybe they have improved it????
If I remember it looked a lot like OL.
Anyone else tried it, or maybe using it now??

I switched from Microsoft Outlook to Mozilla Thunderbird and couldn't be happier. Works great, no problems and I couldn't be happier.

Yes, another affirmative vote for Tbird. After using\trying all the MS variations, I went to Tbird and am well satisfied. Has many optional add-on, if you want them.GEDDIE wrote:I switched from Microsoft Outlook to Mozilla Thunderbird and couldn't be happier. Works great, no problems and I couldn't be happier.
