I don't know what came before the 110 baud acoustic coupler, but I'll share a story about my first modem.

All UK phones used to come from the GPO (general post office, later to be privatised as BT). The GPO provided the line and the phone and nobody could use a different phone. There were no plugs and sockets, the phone was hard wired to the circuit. When I got my first modem I had to attach safety pins to the two leads and carefully insert these into the phone wires to make a connection. It wasn't legal, but it did work.

So that was not a dial up connection but a pin in connection...
