Excel workbook will not open in excel

Not sure what is going on. A friend is unable to open an xlsm workbook I sent him. The workbook doesn’t want to open in excel. We tried right click/open with, but there is no option to select excel. I know he has excel on his computer as he created a blank workbook for me, and if he goes to excel directly he can then select the xlsm and open it (not reopen without using this same process). Any suggestions what may be causing this?

If he selects Open With > Choose another app, is Excel in the list there? If so, he should select it there. If not, scroll down the list and select 'Choose a app on your PC'. He should then be able to find and select EXCEL.EXE.

When using Open With on the xlsm workbook there are multiple selections to chose from (even Word) but no selection for excel or EXCEL.EXE.

When he creates and saves a blank workbook he can Open With on the blank workbook and the selection is Excel

Did he try

If not, scroll down the list and select 'Choose a app on your PC'. He should then be able to find and select EXCEL.EXE.

He'll have to locate EXCEL.EXE - the exact location depends on the version of Office he's using.

yes he tried your suggestions with no success, could not find EXCEL.EXE
He is using Office 2007 on a new computer (if that makes any difference)

For Office 2007, EXCEL.EXE should be in the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12

Was unable to find EXCEL.EXE anywhere on the computer.
Thought about uninstalling the Microsoft Office and then reinstalling

There's an option to repair Microsoft Office when you right-click it in Programs and Features / Apps and Features and select Modify.
