default selection for Office Button | New (XL2007)

When I click File | New I'm presented with 'Blank and recent' as the default offering. Is there any way of making 'My templates...' be the automatically selected option?

No, not that I'm aware of.

I don't think you can change this behaviour.

I didn't think so because what I suppose I'm asking for is the ability customise the 'menu' and while you could tweak the pre Office 2007 menus easily the Office button and the Ribbon are at little more intractable.

Customising the Ribbon and Office menu is not that hard, but you are actually trying to alter the behaviour of a built-in dialog, which is much harder.
